What is A Science Fair Project? A science fair project is a unique way for students to pose questions for which they must seek out answers and to satisfy their own curiosity about the world around them. A science fair project is an experiment, a demonstration, a research effort, a collection of scientific items, or display of scientific apparatus presented for viewing. It represents the efforts of a student's investigation into some area of interest and provides a way for the student to share the results of those investigations. Through the development of a science fair project, students gain a first-hand appreciation of the work of scientists and the value of their discoveries.
Note: The experiment should be something new and different. It should be something that you are really interested in and something you really need to investigate / 'test'.
HEADS UP! No Animals No Toxic Materials Plant/seed projects need to be unique Experimental project NOT a survey or an opinion assignment If you use volunteers than each one will need to fill out a permission slip (fairly long / if chosen to go to city)
How to get started: Here are steps to follow: Choose a topic / Something of interest Create a question (Problem) Be sure your question is something you can test Guess at an answer (Hypothesis) Design a test for that question (Procedures/Detailed Steps) Gather materials Test your answer do the experiment **Be sure there is something that can be measured (Results/Data) Look at your and results (Analyze) Draw a conclusion: Was your guess right or wrong?
Science fair projects: Do you think you will be working alone (usually the best way) or with a partner? You can only work alone or in pairs. If you want to work with a partner you will both be required to have a parental/guardian permission slip filled out.
When looking for your project think: How long will this project take? What materials will I need for this project? What will it costs? What am I trying to discover, change? How will I measure and use as data to support my results?
Science Fair Project Requirements: Research Paper Lab Report (Scientific Method) **data / graphs Journal Display Board (tri-fold board) Basically the lab report large, neat & colorful
When working on your research paper think: What is the main idea of my experiment? What are the key topic areas that I need to research? Is the information I am finding accurate (does it show up in more than one source)? Is there any information that I found that I will use as a direct quote? Don't forget to cite your source when taking direct (key) information.
Research paper will be a minimum of 5 paragraphs, must be typed (Times New Roman size 12) black ink You must have a cover page. You must have a minimum of 3 sources (stay away from Wikipedia) and you have to have at least 2 quotes or citations in your essay.
